This musical was followed by an Easter musical called "The Power And The Glory" that was just as well received.
In 1987, plans were afoot to bring a musical called "The Victor" across the causeway to Singapore. It was to be the second time the choir would present a musical in another country. Hence began the missions tours that the choir would make in the subsequent years to come.
New members were added to the choir and it became a learning experience for many. Pleasure was combined with hard work as they spent a week singing in churches and presenting the message of victory and peace. There were also lighter moments when they took off for some shopping and sight-seeing.
1988 saw another ambitious task to bring a new musical to North Malaysia. It was to be another adventure for the choir as they encountered obstacles and problems along the way. Nevertheless, God chose to use the team to sing of His light. The title of the musical was appropriately entitled "And There Was Light." The choir returned from their trip convinced from the outset that the outcome and results were God's work and they were merely His instruments. They sang in a number of churches in Ipoh, Sungei Patani and Penang.
"Friends...Forever" was the next musical in line for 1989. This was also the year The Singing Ambassadors was born. Once again, the team underwent intensive rehearsals as they prepared to travel up north again to Ipoh and Penang in their quest to bring the message of true friendship to the people there. Meanwhile, the team also prepared for the Christmas presentation with a target of a 100-strong choir to sing "Christmas Classics."
In 1990, The Singing Ambassadors brought an inspiring musical to Medan, Indonesia called "The Light Brigade" to churches and schools within and around Medan, North Sumatra. One again, they witnessed God at work in their own lives and the lives of the Indonesians who expressed a hunger for the Gospel. God spoke to many people through this musical which told of victorious Christian living.
Christmas 1990 saw an upbeat cantata called "The New Twelve Days Of Christmas." The team took the musical to shopping malls and an international hotel while they sang at their home church for two evenings.
A Christmas cantata called "Deck The Mall" was presented in 1991. This production was a compilation of popular Christmas choruses with a modern beat.
From 1993 - 1995, The Singing Ambassadors staged a musical called "The Big Picture." This production was the longest and during that period, the group went on several missions tours - two in Perth, Australia and several in Malaysia.
In 1997, the group performed "Dreamer", a "Dove Award" musical written by Cam Floria. This was their most ambitious and biggest project to date which carried full props and costumes on stage. They played to almost full houses at a premier auditorium in Kuala Lumpur for two evenings.
In July in the same year, the group attended the 5th Asian Baptist World Congress in Taiwan and participated in an international choral contest among countries like Philippines, Taiwan, India and South Korea.
1998 was a year of rest for the Ambassadors. Nonetheless, they played hosts to the famous Continentals from the US for a week in April. It was also a learning experience for them as they watched The Continentals stage their latest musical called "David - A Man After God's Own Heart", the newest creation from Cam Floria. It was a wonderful week of cultural exchange and friendship.
In August, Bobby Michaels returned for a second time to Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church to sing. This Gospel singer who has more than 5 albums like "I Have A Reason", "Time" and his latest recording, "Healing Under Your Wings" to his credit was on part of a South East Asia tour. Although it was just one evening of wonderful testimony and songs, the concert attracted many people who came from near and far to hear this music missionary sing. |
