CHRISTMAS @ LOW YAT

In the past years, never before had churches been given an opportunity to make a public profession of their faith during Christmas. Tbhis year was different. With the support of Kementerian Wilayah Persekutuan, Kementerian Pelancongan, Kementerian Kebudayaan, Kesenian & Warisan, Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, the working committee of Barisan National Bukit Bintang invited churches in Kuala Lumpur to co-host a public Christmas celebration in Bukit Bintang. Plaza Low Yat and Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur were our main sponsors for this event.

A committee comprising of members from five churches, headed by Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church was set up to plan and organize the programme for the coundown on
December 24, 2007 from 6:00 pm to 12 midnight. For the Christmas Countdown, a Christmas tree, measuring 25

feet was put up outside Plaza Low Yat to mark the beginning of the Christmas celebration that began on December 15, 2007. Churches in Kuala Lumpur were invited to send their church choir to sing carols from December 15 to December 23 before the CHristmas Countdown.

This was the first time churches put aside their denominational differences to pursue a common goal to share with the public the message of Christmas. The Countdown started with great joy and anticipation as the churches (Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church, City Harvest Church, Assumption Church, St. Anthony Church) presented their Christmas special items. Among the invited guests were the students of the Mainstream Music School of Art and the Dancers of DBKL. Other Christmas guest artistes were Danny Wan, Vick Teo and the Os Pombos Band.

Christmas is a time of giving and a charity drive corner was also set up to invite the public to put their hand print to raise funds for Siloam Home, Yayasan Sunbeams Home and Jinjang Methodist Community Centre.

The VIPs who graced the occasion were Datuk Dr. Lee Chong Meng (Chairman of Barisan National, Bukit Bintang), Mr. Francis Anthony (Representative of Low Yat Group), Rev. John Kok (Representative of the churches of KL) and YB Dr. Leong Siew Mun (Representative of Datuk Bandar, KL).
