Before going into full-time ministry, John worked in Othman & Ng Securities (a stock broker firm). He was enlisted as a church intern on 1 January 1982. He went overseas to Australia to complete his Diploma in
Church Doctrine and Practice from Emmaus Bible College (1985-1986). Upon his graduation, he returned to serve at KLBC as Director of Youth in 1987 and was re-designated as Director of Discipleship in 1988.

In 1989 he was appointed as the Minister of the English congregation and in December of the same year became the Assistant Pastor.

In 1996 he graduated from the Malaysia Baptist Theological Seminary in Penang with a double degree in Bachelor in Ministry and Masters in Christian Ministry.

He was the former Chairman of the Malaysia Baptist Convention and General Council member of the
Baptist World Alliance. He has been elected as Vice-President of Asia-Pacific Baptist Federation (2007-2012) in the recent conference in Chiangmai.

John is married to Grace Lee and they have two boys, Alvin and Kelvin and a daughter Sue Ann.
